Short description: The objective of the course is to present various types of protected areas and show their role in the maintaining the biological diversity. The course familiarizes students with the threats of biodiversity and the basics of modern methods of nature conservation. Students learn management methods used at various levels of the organization of life: from the level of population, through the ecosystem up to the ecological landscape. Also main issues concerning the contemporary global crisis of the biodiversity and future challenges in that area are presented and discussed.
Full description: During the lectures, students learn: • Categories of protected areas and some of their networks in European Union; • ecological issues related to the threats of biological diversity at the levels of population, ecosystems and the landscape; • management methods in active protection of species and habitats. • current and future problems of the threats and the conservation of biodiversity on a global scale; In the course of the classes: • students learn the issues concerning the legal frames and management rules in the Natura 2000 network of protected areas; • students analyse case studies related to management methods at the level of population, community, habitat and landscape; • students prepare presentations and essays on the topics concerning important issues related to biodiversity, nature conservation and protected areas.

Learning outcomes: Knowledge Students acquire knowledge of the management on the protected areas. They learn the legal and organizational conditions for the creation of protected areas, their operation, financing and management methods. Skills Students are able to: a) develop plans of conservation procedures for NATURA 2000 sites; b) recognize and resolve conflicts in protected areas. Social competences Students understand the need for the creation of protected areas as a form of conservation of biodiversity at its various levels. They appreciate the need for further training.
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: grade obtained at classes (50%) + grade obtained at lectures (50%)
